In 1978, Professors Joseph Renzulli and Sally Reis decided to host a summer conference focused on Enrichment Teaching and Learning. They did not want it to be just any conference, though; they wanted to combine the best qualities of a CONference with a summer instiTUTE and add a whole lot of FRAternity in between; read more in this letter from Joseph Renzulli.

For one week every summer, educators converge on the beautiful flagship campus of the University of Connecticut in Storrs, Conn., for a jam-packed schedule of events to engage, inspire, and rejuvenate educators.


We believe that all students can benefit from enjoyable and challenging learning opportunities and that learning is maximized when we consider each student’s abilities, interests, learning styles, and preferred modes of expression. Our focus is on accommodating these differences in a variety of settings. We have shown through our research that a strength-based approach is the best way to both challenge our most advanced learners and to close the achievement gap for at risk youngsters.

Please note that Confratute 2020 in its traditional in-person format on the UConn Storrs campus was canceled for 2020; therefore, the FAQs below do not reflect updated information. However, Confratute is offering several free online workshops in mid-July. Learn more.


Q: What is Confratute?

A: Confratute is a CONFerence and an instiTUTE with a lot of FRATernity in between. Read more in this letter from Joseph Renzulli.


Q: When does Confratute start?

A: On-site registration and check-in begins on Sunday, July 12, at 1 p.m. at the Rome Commons Main Lobby.


Q: When does Confratute end?

A: Confratute ends on Friday, July 17, at 12 noon.


Q: Where is Confratute?

A: Confratute is held at the University of Connecticut in Storrs, Conn., in the rural Northeast corner of the state. Classes are held in various buildings located near the South Campus Residence Hall Complex and in the campus core. Details and directions are listed in the Welcome to Confratute Information Packet that will be posted to our website in February.


Q: What is the daily schedule?

A: The strand schedule and descriptions can be found on our website. Each day begins with a keynote presentation at 8:30 a.m.

Three daily strands are offered.  Strands are mini-courses that meet four times throughout the week at the same time each day. 

Strand A - 10:00-12:00, Tuesday-Friday

Strand B - 1:30-3:00 (Monday-Thursday)

Strand C - 3:30-5:00 (Monday-Thursday)

A variety of Special Topic sessions are offered at 3:30 p.m., Monday through Thursday, and each day ends with Evening Forums at 7:30 p.m., consisting of forums on Arts & Creativity, Key Topics for Classroom Teachers, Key Topics for Leaders, and Technology topics. A detailed schedule will be posted on our website shortly before Confratute begins and also given out at check-in at Confratute. 


Q: Do I need to sign up for the strands that I want to attend throughout the week? 

A: Preregistration for specific strands is not needed, but you can use the Strand Schedule located on our website to configure your own schedule for the week. 


Q: How do I sign up for the Confratute mobile app? 

A: You will receive an email sometime after you register for Confratute telling you how to sign up and create a profile to build your personalized schedule, share photos and posts to the activity stream, and network with other Confratute attendees. Opt in to receive push notifications to stay up-to-date with Confratute news and announcements. Use the menu at the top left to access schedules, staff and presenter biographies, the campus map, and more.


Q: What do I need to do to get contact hours?

A: You can earn contact hours by attending a full schedule of keynotes, strands, and special sessions. A record of the sessions and activities you attend is required. A planning and documentation guide will be provided to you for this purpose. The guide will need to be completed and turned in before the end of Confratute in order to receive the noted contact hours. More details will be available in the Schedule of Events packet that you will receive upon arrival, as well as at Orientation. 


Q: What do I need to do to sign up for graduate credit for Confratute?

A: There is nothing that you need to do before you arrive if you are a nondegree student. See the Welcome Packet (available in February) for details on how to apply for graduate credit once you arrive on campus. 


Q: How much does Confratute cost?

A: The cost for Confratute varies according to the package you choose. We also offer an early bird discount for registrations that arrive before June 1. For prices on each of the packages, please see the registration page, email conferences@uconn.edu, or call 860.486.1038 for more information.


Q: How does the group discount work?

A: Discount prices for groups of 3 or more people attending from the same school or school district can be obtained by registering as a group online. Group registrations must be submitted together by June 1 in order for the discount to be applied, and the group members to be housed together or in close proximity to one another. Group registration payments can be submitted by mailing a check or paying online with a credit card or purchase order. Contact Conference Services for group prices and procedures at conferences@uconn.edu.


Q: Are there costs other than registration?

A: There are separate costs for graduate credits, airport shuttle, and educational materials for strands that recommend textbooks or manuals. See the Welcome Packet (available in February) for more information.


Q: Are there any scholarships available for Confratute?

A: Confratute does not offer any scholarships, but we have compiled a listing of recommended websites for grants and scholarships that may be appropriate for teachers of gifted and talented students. We have also prepared a Sample Grant Proposal Template (PDF format) for teachers to use as a template for submitting funding requests to school districts. 


Q: What is the registration deadline?

A: The deadline for Confratute registration is July 1, but your registration must arrive by June 1 to receive the early-bird discount. Registering as early as possible is encouraged to allow for confirmation to be mailed to you before you arrive. It is possible that Confratute will be filled prior to July 1. 


Q: Where do I register? 

A: Register online by July 1 (June 1 for the early-bird discount).


Q: Can I register by phone?

A: Online registration is required for individuals and groups. This option is available through [Link to come]. If you are not able to register using the online process, please contact Conference Services at 860.486.1038 or conferences@uconn.edu.


Q: Can I pay by credit card?

A: Payment by credit card and purchase order can be entered in the online registration system.


Q: When should I arrive to Confratute?

A: Participants are expected to register and check into the residence halls on Sunday, July 12, beginning at 1 p.m. See the Welcome Packet (available in February) for arrival details. Commuters are expected to arrive on Monday between 7:30 and 8:30 a.m. for registration and check-in. Strand counseling is also available Sunday evening, 5-7 p.m.


Q: When is check-in and onsite registration?

A: You should plan to arrive on Sunday, July 12, between 1 and 7 p.m. to check-in, register, and pick up your Confratute materials. Orientation and keynote presentation begins at 7:30 p.m. that evening. If you have registered for a resident package, your housing and meals begin Sunday evening. See the Welcome Packet (available in February) for details.


Q: What is Strand Counseling?

A: Participants who would like some help choosing strands and classes that meet their professional goals can meet with strand counselors on Sunday, July 12, between 5 and 7 p.m. in the Rome Commons main lobby and on the patio (weather permitting).


Q: What if I miss the Sunday or Monday registration?

A: If you miss both registration times, you must go to Command Central in Rome Hall for instructions on how to check-in and receive your registration materials. 


Q: What if I need to cancel my registration? Will I receive a refund?

A: For a full refund, cancellations must be received by July 1, or a $50 cancellation fee will be charged. No refunds will be processed and discounts will not apply if registrations are received after July 1.



Q: What is the campus housing like?

A: Resident packages include premium housing in the South Campus Residence Hall. The dorms are comfortable and air-conditioned. For detailed information about these accommodations, please see the Welcome Packet (available in February).


Q: Are there hotels in the area?

A: For participants who want to stay in accommodations other than the South Campus dorms, there is a listing of local and airport hotels and inns in our Welcome Packet (available in February). If you choose to stay anywhere other than the residence dorms, you will have to register as a commuter and pay for your hotel expenses separately.

The Graduate Hotel is located on campus next to Rome Commons and offers a discounted rate for Confratute participants. Reservations can be made online using the group code CFTUTE20. Rates increase after June 12, 2020.


Q: Can I choose my roommate?

A: You may indicate your roommate preference in the registration system. If no preferred roommate is listed on your registration, you will be assigned a roommate and/or suitemates.


Q: Are there any campus housing options for people with special needs?

A: We have a limited number of handicap accessible rooms available in the residence halls. Please contact the Conference Services office if you have a medical condition or disability that requires special housing considerations.


Q: Can my spouse or guest come if he/she is not participating in Confratute?

A: Spouses or guests of participants may register for Confratute with a housing and meal plan only. Please contact the Conference Services office for spouse package costs or to register online. 



Q: What meals are provided for participants?

A: Meals start on Sunday evening with a light dinner and end Friday at noon with lunch. Attendees should indicate dietary restrictions when registering. For commuters without a meal package, there will be a listing of local restaurants available in Command Central.



Q: Is there shuttle service available from the airport or bus/train station?

A: Shuttles are available from Bradley International Airport to Storrs, Conn., beginning at 12 noon on Sunday, July 12, and will run every other hour until 7 p.m. Shuttles will also be available on Friday, July 17, at 12:30 p.m. and 1:30 p.m. A link to reserve the shuttle is available when you register online. Shuttle fees are nonrefundable.  A listing of transportation companies who provide alternative transportation is located in our Welcome Packet (available in February).
